How are you going to keep your blog alive? Maggie Mason's book, No One Cares What You Had for Lunch, has lots of tips and writing ideas for bloggers but as teachers you could write that book. The same prompts that you've used with students in years past may actually be more interesting on line. Just a thought. BTW I had a grilled chicken salad from La Hacienda yesterday for lunch and it was exceptional. The greens were crisp, the chicken spicy, but not too spicy, and the salsa dressing was robust and fragrant. I have a hard time finding good salads in Palatka. I think it was newsworthy. So maybe you might care what I had for lunch if I was doing a resturant review? Maybe your students would like to write reviews for the best places to eat in Putnam County? What other "reviews" could you ask your students to conduct on a blog?
Kids get so excited about Reading Counts points and we are constantly competing for the hightest points. A blog for kids to tell about the books they are reading might just prevent rigor mortis---not for a blog---but in teachers who do not take advantage of an awesome idea like a blog. Put it in the hands of those who will use it--the kids will keep it alive

I think to use the blog as a competition for making entries about the reading challenges would keep it alive at least for that school year.

Another idea for posting reviews on a blog could include students' reviews of the books they have read. I find that they are much more inclined to choose a book recommended by their peers than by a teacher or mysself.

I know what you mean about a dead blog. I created one for my family and it was exciting at first, even my 82 yr old mom had a shortcut on her desktop. A few people posted, commented and added photos, but then no one else was participating.
To keep a blog alive it has to be easy to access, interesting and updated often. I'm going to try this again with the book club blog at school.

I think students would like to review CDs, movies, U-tube clips, web sites, and/or place to shop.

Students at my school could write and share reviews of the new computer games I just purchased for my library media center.
