Annie Oldham, the Rams JV softball team third baseman, singles during a rain-shortened 13-13 tie against visiting Ridgeview High School Wednesday evening.
The IHS Rams JV girls softball team took a strange path to staying undefeated Wednesday.
In a steady rain, IHS rallied after trailing 8-0 going into the bottom of the first inning, and 13-7 entering the bottom of the second, to tie Ridgeview 13-13.
Interlachen's Hannah Ogle ripped a two-out, bases-clearing triple into the left-centerfield gap, tying the game at 13-13. After Ram catcher Rudy Kelley -- who spent most of the shortened game blocking pitches in the dirt -- hit a line shot snared by the visiting third baseman, umpires called the game.
Both IHS starting pitcher Lauren Hill and the Ridgeview starter struggled to grip the ball in the rain, as baserunners on both teams advanced often on wild pitches.
"It's definitely the most pitches I've blocked in two innings, and I've been playing since I was 7 years old," Kelley said.
Ogle said she was looking in a certain location for the pitch she hit for the triple.
"I was looking for it straight down the middle," Ogle said. "It was a little outside but I was still able to hit it hard."
Behind Head Coach Ron Whitehurst, the JV team is 3-0-1. His varsity team, which plays tonight at Bradford High School, is 5-1. The JV girls are also scheduled to play in Bradford tonight.
IHS starting pitcher Lauren Hill tags a runner trying to score on a wild pitch Wednesday night at the high school. The game was called after two innings and a 13-13 tie.
